Today, all new and existing Compute VPS plans has been connected to our new beta firewall. The main reason behind this firewall is to initially block access on ports that is commonly used for abuse such as sending email spam. Abuse is not just expensive for us in terms of money and resources, it also affects everyone else in the same datacenter as whole ranges of IP addresses could be blocked and network performance reduced.
Which ports are blocked?
Initially we block as few ports as possible, all ports above 1024 remains open, http(s), ssh, telnet, ftp, rdp, vnc etc remains open.
One of the ports I need is blocked, what can I do?
Contact support or reply in this thread, our goal is to stop spam, not legitimate usage.
What about email, port 25?
Email spam is the most common type of spam we are dealing with, port 25 is commonly used by local email servers that uses SMTP. As a result of this you'll have to use an external mail service instead of sending emails directly from any of our servers.
Can I bypass the firewall?
We plan to release a policy soon in where you can verify your identity using valid identification papers to get your instances to bypass the firewall and become allowed to use all ports. Until then we try to improve the firewall as much as possible to reduce the need of a full bypass.
