The problem is nvidia in this case, the open source Nouveau driver plays really nice with wayland. Got it running on one of my laptops, problem is, without power management support the open source driver won't handle any graphic intensive task like gaming.
And the proprietary driver just won't play nice with wayland at all.
It's a shame really, but there seems to be no better solution than to switch to an AMD GPU, unless you only want to use your high end nvidia GPU for desktop work.
Wayland itself seems really nice tho, very smooth and simply superior. It even has xwayland, a protocol that translates and allow you to run X11 apps on wayland. Basically backwards compatibility without bloat or fuckery, like you get with wine for instance.
