Ideas for a decentralized database cluster on 99Stack Cloud

I have about $30/month to spend on a database solution powered by mariadb 10.1 which is at time of writing the default version on Debian. And some additional funds to enable backups. Now which approach should I go for in order to get the most out of my money? I've been looking for the G2-optimized-2 plan which seems to be in my price range and it has more than double the performance I need.

On the other hand there's other smaller plans available that'll do the job just as good, but how secure is it? is there any risk of downtime? I really can't have that.

Well, it won't be a decentralized cluster if you rely on a single node, try setting up three G2-standard-1 in different data centers and use galera or similar to keep them in sync. Or even better, use a different generation for each node. $30/month is still a very low price for a high availability cluster, don't be a cheapskate if you care about your clients security.

Sorry if I was unclear, my idea was to use multiple servers in different regions, didn't thought about using different generations tho so thank you for mentioning that 👍️

Anyway my main concern regarding these optimized servers would be what to focus on, should I go for more memory or more CPU cores?

Alright, now it makes more sense. Tho there's no general rule regarding the amount of vCPU's vs the amount of RAM I'd choosethe balanced plane, 2 cores and 2GB ram. You'd want more ram than cpu on a database server but if you're gonna use a multi region cluster with different generations you'd want equal performance on each node. And since optimized 1-3 or 3-1 servers doesn't exist on G1 and G3 you'll be fine with a 2-2 server.

Your price range would then be $20 to $40 per month.

Well prices do change over time, but luckily they're always unchanged once you've launched a server. Keep an eye on the price list and you might be able to find yourself a good deal, I still have a few servers that I'm only paying $6/mo for, got them back in 2017 and paid with Bitcoin.

Maybe the prices here are following the Bitcoin price somehow, it's usually the opposite but I can't help but notice the correlation of a 40% price drop at the same time bitcoin almost doubles in value. 😉
