Generally speaking, you may choose a multi data center setup to protect against hardware or connectivity failures in a certain region. Different generations may also protect you from legal issues, if say one individual data center fails to obey the law and is therefore shutdown.
It should be mentioned that above event is not very likely. However, if it where to happen it would be classified as Force Majeure where you'd only get a refund, but no compensation. Don't forget to have a backup plan.
