Best strategy for a database cluster

So I'm looking into setting up a 3 or 5 node database cluster using mariadb with galera, I'm familiar with the software but which data center locations should I choose, preferably outside of the USA, in order to serve visitors from the USA, for best possible uptime and redundancy?

You should consider using servers from different generations. Now databases are back-end software and relatively safe from the legal aspect. Just don't forget to setup some sort of TLS connection between them to avoid any data from leaking out.

Let's see, a 3 node cluster:

110: Mexico City, Mexico
210: Toronto, Canada
310: Frankfurt, Germany

Always good to have a node "offshore" too, and Europe has great connectivity to the US. For a 5 node, throw in Dallas, Texas (304) and Miami, Florida 111 as well. Those are strong red states who takes free speech seriously.

Plenty of USA based location tho, why not just pick a few within close to your visitors, and spread over all generations? If some government agency want to censor you they'll find a way, but your privacy is at least protected.
