As the title suggests, how can I install a desktop environment on a Linux VPS?

It's relatively simple actually, use your package manager. For Ubuntu/dEbian based distros you could use the following command to install xfce4 for instance:

sudo apt-get install xfce4

To take advantage of your desktop environment you would then need some kind of VNC or remote desktop software, for that I can recommend tightvnc (VNC) or xrdp (Remote desktop).

I'd recommend xrdp if you're on Windows since remote desktop client is already available on most Windows PC's

chad it's only available on professional and above versions, not on the home version if I remember correct.

Also, if you're looking for a more lightweight environment for a server use openbox:

sudo apt-get install openbox
