What's the difference between generations?

I see G1, G2 and G3 in the products list which looks very similar, F.A.Q says there's no hierarchical technical difference. So what's the difference between the generations? are they all the same, and if that case why divide them by generation in the first place? It's confusing.

There are some technical differences, I think for instance that G1-standard uses a CPU frequency of 2.4GHz, while G2-standard runs only at 1.8GHz. G1 has faster network but DDoS protection cost extra while G2 and G3 include DDoS protection. G2 may however null route your traffic in case of a massive DDoS attack.

But anyway, that's just some small differences. The real important thing is that each generation is an individual provider, with their own rules and local legal jurisdictions. Unfortunately G1, G2 and G3 are all US based. Tho there are rumors about G4 and G5 which will both be EU based.

Yes, I noticed some KB articles about that, to no further bench marking information but I understand there's some variation, not just between generations but also between the data centers.

The real important thing is that each generation is an individual provider, with their own rules and local legal jurisdictions.

Ah, well that makes perfect sense. It's a cleaver design.

Still tho, if you want to host outside the US and outside the 14 prying eyes G101 is excellent. Especially the Switzerland regions because of Switzerland's great privacy laws. (Don't confuse Switzerland and Sweden).

There are premium generations too available for business and reseller accounts only. G101 and up where each data center is an individual unit legally speaking, these plans are more in class with AWS, GCP and similar both feature wise and price wise.

Too bad it's not as well documented as the other generations yet but I guess it'll be eventually once the demand on those resources increase. As far as I understand payment allocations can be a bit tricky if you decide to switch between underlying providers too often. G1, G2 and G3 can at least allocate resources between all their regions but G101 can't.

As far as I understand, only standard and optimized G2 and G3 use shared CPU resources with burst allowed. On G1 you are free to use 100% CPU all the time on any plan. Memory can be fully utilized on all plans. And all storage is high performance SSD so you can actually add some swap and it'll be fast enough to still operate even tho aggressive swapping is used.

For instance, 8GB ram and 16GB swap where 8GB swap is in use, is when you start to notice a slowed down system. No I/O errors tho, which you might get on other virtualization software or slow old hard drives.
